FATHER'S COMMANDMENT
Scripture Reading - Proverbs 6:20-22
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. KJV
Dear Believer, notice in verse 20 we are encouraged as children to keep our “father’s commandment”. Although the word commandment is used in the singular form it is referring to all the commandments of our father. Yes, we (ihlcc) believe the phrase “thy father’s commandments” to be synonymous with the phrase “God’s Word”. The Book of Proverbs is such a practical book when paralleling natural examples to spiritual principles ordained by God. We all know a good loving honorable natural (earthly) father is only a fraction of the reflection our awesome compassionate Heavenly Father. We received the great revelation of our Heavenly Father’s love from the Gospel of Jesus and the teachings of the Lord’s apostles. The key message of Jesus Christ and His apostles seems to be keep God’s Word and walk in God’s Love! Thy “Father’s commandment” is the whole counsel of God and “the law of thy mother” is specifically referring to the Love of God. Just like a mother’s love is merciful and everlasting toward her children so must our love be toward others by showing mercy as a true disciple of Christ. We know God’s Word is contained in the Holy Bible but we are commissioned to keep it in our heart. We must keep God’s Word inside our spirit by believing the Holy Bible and pondering the precious promises of God. Then speaking God’s Word outwardly is a key part our foundation for living it publicly for all to see. The speaking and doing of God’s Word must always be done in the spirit of God’s Love to accurately represent our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When we do that consistently His Word will lead us into the perfect ways of God. Notice that verse 22 did not say the Holy Spirit will lead us it clearly states the Word of God will lead us. Also this Holy Word of God will keep us when we sleep and talk with us when we get up. Therefore this Word of God must be the voice of God speaking to us daily. So study the Word of God because that is the only way we are going to know our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ intimately. When you come to a place of daily fellowship with your Lord Jesus you will know thy “Father’s Commandment” both spiritually and practically. Amen!
